Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon Landing through Native American Moon Legends

MoonStrike celebrates the 50th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon Landing with new music by Emmy-Winning Chickasaw composer Jerod Impichchaachaaha’ Tate, Guggenheim Fellow Jake Heggie, and MoonArk composer Erberk Eryilmaz.

The program features the world premiere of Tate’s MoonStrike (20x2020 No. 18), a new commission inspired by Native American moon legends. Commander John Herrington, Chickasaw astronaut and the first member of a Native American tribe to fly in space, joins as narrator and honored guest.

We team with Turkish-born composer Erberk Eryilmaz for the world premiere of a work to be launched to the moon on the MoonArk spacecraft in 2012 . And musical saw performer Anita Orne joins us for the Texas premiere of Jake Heggie’s Earthrise, a work inspired by the eponymous iconic photo captured by Apollo 8 astronaut Bill Anders. A newly commissioned fibre art piece by Geoffrey Shilling provides a stunning backdrop to this bold anniversary concert.
