About

Sankofa (noun) - It expresses the importance of reaching back to knowledge gained in the past and bringing it into the present in order to make positive progress. It is about remembering the past in order to protect and create a promising future.

We hope to do that with our theatrical expression: re-ignite the passion to create lasting theatrical memories by building upon those who came before us and create room for so many artists (young and old) to secure promising futures in the arts.

We are The Sankofa Collective. Still exposing, educating and enriching. Still in Houston. Only this time, looking backward as we move forward. Onward to upward!

The Sankofa Collective (formally known as The Bayou Theatre Company; BTC) is a Texas non-profit organization established to utilize the performing arts as an outreach and entertainment source to the underserved population of the Greater Houston community and beyond.

Founded by three young performers, (Alric Davis, Trey Morgan Lewis, and Yesha Benjamin), the Sankofa Collective will serve as a pre-professional avenue of creative expression and artistic development for at-risk youth.  The programs offered will provide a positive alternative to otherwise negative activities and associations.

The Sankofa Collective is co-producer of The Color Purple with the Garden Theatre at the MATCH in August 2024. For more information click here: THE COLOR PURPLE
