Black Lab Theatre

Mission

Dedicated to producing regional, local and world premieres that embody the values of theatrical ingenuity, integrity, and sincerity.

About

Black Lab Theatre is committed to producing great plays that are new and relevant. Our aim is to challenge and entertain by providing audiences the opportunity to see a wide range of new works from up and coming playwrights whose work represents the finest contemporary theatre. Rather than focus on major revivals, traditional productions or outright experimental theater, Black Lab Theatre will focus on staging socially and politically relevant shows that enhance the experiential impact of theater to a new generation of audiences.

Founded in 2011 by Rice University graduate Jordan Jaffe, Black Lab Theatre has quickly grown into one of Houston's most exciting theatre companies. Under Jordan's leadership as Artistic Director, the company has staged the Houston & regional premieres of such plays as Chinglish by David Henry Hwang (produced in collaboration with Asia Society Texas Center), Bad Jews by Joshua Harmon (produced with Stages Repertory Theatre and the Evelyn Rubenstein Jewish Community Center of Houston), boom by Peter Sinn Nachrieb (Houston Press Award 2012-13 nominee for Best Play/Production), Tigers Be Still by Kim Rosenstock, Really Really by Paul Downs Colaizzo (Broadway World Award 2013-14 nominee for Best Play/Production), 4000 Miles by Amy Herzog, Assistance by Leslye Headland, The Submission by Jeff Talbott (Broadway World Award 2012-13 nominee for Best Play/Production), Our House by Theresa Rebeck (Houston Press Award 2012-13 nominee for Best Director David Rainey), and Farragut North by Beau Willimon.

In its new phase, Black Lab aims to provide a home for the creation of ground breaking original theatre works through our new play development program we've named 'the Pipeline'.

Best known nationally as "Space City" and "the Energy Capital of the World", Houston is a city that prides itself on its reputation for bold ideas, adventure, and cutting edge entrepreneurship and technological advance. At Black Lab theatre, we aren't going to put a man on the moon, but we are going to approach developing new works of theater like we are trying to. Our productions are designed to cover uncharted territory in experiential theater, and engage our audiences to think critically about the world around them.
