Pop Up Kino presents Different From the Others. Banned at the time of its release, later burned by the Nazis and  lost for more than forty years before its archival restoration, Different From the Others is a ground-breaking silent film that is believed to be the first pro-gay film in the history of cinema. Created by director Richard Oswald and sexologist Dr. Magnus Hirschfeld, the film responded to a draconian 1871 penal code that made homosexuality a criminal offense. Starring Paul Körner, a concert violinist who falls in love with one of his students. Blackmailed by a extortionist threatening to expose him, Körner seeks out protection from the courts.

University of Houston Professor Dr. Sandra Frieden will introduce the film.
