MADELEINE

Comic operetta by Victor Herbert

Madeleine is a delightfully silly comic operetta in one act by Victor Herbert set to a libretto by Grant Stewart, after the French play Je dîne chez ma mère (I'm dining at my mother's house) by Adrien Decourcelle and Lambert-Thiboust. It premiered as a double bill with Pagliacci at the Metropolitan Opera in New York on 24 January 1914.

Our story recounts the chagrin of Las Vegas headliner, Madeleine Fleury, who can’t seem to get a date for dinner on New Year's Day. All of her fans and admirers have promised to have dinner with their mothers instead. Even her staff refuses for the same reason. Mercifully, her childhood friend, Didier Pollock, a modest artist, invites her to join him at his parents’ home, but in the end, she refuses, deciding to stay home alone instead. Sung in English.
